The Metcalfe family came to Silver Hill as tenants in 1947 and bought the farm in 1982 when it came available. It wasn't a viable unit to support a growing family so we started contracting as M Metcalfe and Sons in 1968.

By that stage the family, headed by Maurice and Gwen Metcalfe and their two sons Wilf and Martin, had already been working part-time for another team of contractors and had worked out that there was a big enough demand for another contracting business in the area. In 1994, Martin's son Charles, joined the family firm.

M. Metcalfe and Sons have been providing an agricultural contracting service since 1968 covering an area that takes in North Yorkshire and County Durham.

Our first contracting service was hedge cutting with a MF165 tractor and McConnell circular saw hedge cutter. We then expanded into all farm-contracting services.

In 2001, we were culled out by the foot and mouth epidemic and instead of restocking we decided to diversify into green waste recycling. We now shred biodegradable green waste and wood waste. We are also specialists in leading waste from the food and drink industry.

With the new legislation implemented during 2006, we are now registered carriers and brokers of farm waste offering a service of collection and baling for recycling.
